It sure has been a stormy couple of months for our state and county! While we welcome the rain, the extreme conditions caused many schools and school districts to close their campuses as atmospheric river storms hit our region.
During emergencies like these, decisions about closing - and reopening - schools are never, ever, taken lightly. In partnership with law enforcement and public safety officials, school leaders carefully assess their local conditions, examine the risks, and then together make decisions that are centered on the safety of students, families, and staff.
The March 14, 2023 storm caused closures of at least 178 schools serving 102,000 students across the state due to extreme wind, rains, flooding, mudslides, road closures, evacuations, and other safety concerns, according to the California Department of Education (Ed Source).
As weather events become more extreme, we ask our communities to stay aware, check for updates with their individual school sites, and be sure to sign up for emergency alerts via readysbc.org.You can read the March edition of my countywide community newsletter HERE.
Sincerely,
Dr. Susan Salcido, County Superintendent of Schools

Children's Creative Project
The Children’s Creative Project supports TK-12 arts education in Santa Barbara County schools. In 2019-2020 this included 400 performances and arts workshops for 50,000 children at 90 school sites. Throughout the pandemic, CCP has provided critical arts programming through virtual offerings and is eager to return to in-person experiences this school year. In addition to performances and workshops, CCP hosts large events with touring national and international artists. CCP also hosts the annual I Madonnari Festival to raise additional funds for in-school arts education.
