Katya Armistead—representing Trustee Area 6—has been deeply engaged in education, leadership, and community service throughout her career. A proud alumna of UC Santa Barbara, Katya earned her bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 1988, followed by a master’s degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University in 2007. She later returned to UCSB to complete her doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2012.

With over 34 years of experience in higher education, Katya began her professional journey in the Office of Admissions at UC Santa Barbara. Over the course of 17 years in that role, she guided countless junior and high school students on their paths to higher education. She is now an administrator as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Life. As a mother of two sons who attended and graduated from Peabody Charter School, Santa Barbara Junior High, and Santa Barbara High School, Katya was an active parent volunteer, further demonstrating her passion for education.

Katya’s dedication to community service is evident through her involvement with various local organizations. She participated in the Katherine Harvey Fellows program through the Santa Barbara Foundation, during which she helped establish Youth Making Change, a youth-led grantmaking program now supported by The Fund for Santa Barbara. She served for a decade on the board of the Family Service Agency, including three years as chair, and has mentored for over eight years with the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse’s Fighting Back Mentor Program.

Katya is currently a board member and facilitator for the Emerging Leaders Program with Leading From Within, a nonprofit organization that cultivates leadership in the nonprofit sector. She also serves on the board of Women’s Economic Ventures (WEV), which promotes economic empowerment and growth in the region.

Katya’s lifelong commitment to education and leadership development, combined with her active role in supporting youth and families, continues to positively impact the Santa Barbara community.
