Sarah Anne Read—who represents Trustee Area 3—has been a dedicated advocate for education, family, and community since moving to Lompoc in 2019. Originally from the East Coast, about an hour south of Washington, D.C., Sarah relocated to California after her husband retired from a 20-year career in the Air Force. Together, they merged their families and built a life in Santa Barbara County. Sarah is a Registered Nurse with a passion for community well-being.

As a mother of five children, Sarah is deeply invested in education. Sarah shared that her philosophy on education goes far beyond academics. She believes that students need a safe and supportive environment where they can grow not only intellectually but also emotionally. She champions diverse literature, open dialogue, and creative thinking in schools, recognizing that students are more than their grades—they are individuals with unique perspectives and potential.

Her vision includes ensuring that educators and staff receive high-quality professional development and access to modern tools that enhance teaching and learning. Sarah shared that she advocates for recruiting and retaining exceptional teachers, understanding that they are key to building a well-rounded, high-achieving educational system. She envisions a county that sets a benchmark for educational excellence, where every student is supported to succeed.

Sarah’s commitment to public service and education stems from her belief in the power of a strong school system to shape not only students’ futures but also the future of the entire community. She shared that she is honored to serve as a member of the Santa Barbara County Board of Education and is committed to fostering an inclusive, innovative, and high-quality educational environment for all.
