Governing Board Member General Election

The statewide general election will be held on Tues., Nov. 8, 2022, to elect district governing board members to fill terms that will expire on Dec. 9 (second Friday in December).
Order of Election Process for School Districts

In May or June, the Order of Elections form(s) must be completed and adopted by your board. A fillable template is provided for your convenience under Forms and Templates. If you are required to consolidate the Election with San Luis Obispo or Ventura counties, you must provide a separate resolution for each County Elections Office.
Please return copies of the adopted Order of Election form(s) as follows:
- two copies to SBCEO – Attention: Administrator, School Business Advisory Services
- one copy to the Elections Office by no later than Fri., July 1 before 5 p.m.

Other informational items that you may find useful when preparing for your district’s election.
Education Code Section 5340 states the county superintendent of schools shall notify districts that a consolidated election must be held.

3. General Election Calendar
A calendar and timeline of election activities is provided for your convenience.
Candidates may obtain nomination documents between July 18 and Aug. 12 (5 p.m.). If the incumbent or any one of the incumbents (for districts with boards elected at-large) has not filed by Aug. 13 (5 p.m.), the filing period is extended to Aug. 17 (5 p.m.) at the Santa Barbara County clerk-recorder offices in Santa Barbara or Santa Maria (locations listed above).

Candidate's Statement of Qualifications Resolution Template
If an existing Candidate’s Statement of Qualifications is still in force, you may provide a copy of the resolution. If the district’s board will be adopting a new resolution regarding Candidate’s Statement of Qualifications, the provided template may be used.

Current district boundary map for districts elected "at-large"
If the district is moving to “district-based” elections (board to be elected by-district, by-division, or by-trustee area) and has already submitted redistricting information, including a current map copy and/or GIS data, to the Elections Division, a copy of the district boundary map is not required.

Notice of Elective Offices to be Filled
This form has been revised to account for districts that will be transitioning from “at-large” to “district-based” elections (board to be elected by-district, by-division, or by-trustee area) commencing with the November 8, 2022, General Election. In Section 1, please specify all full-term (or 4-year term) offices to be filled, method of election, and other applicable information (such as district-based title and number assignment, and incumbent information). In Section 2, please list any short term (or 2-year term) offices to be filled, method of election, and other applicable information (such as district-based title and number assignment and incumbent information).

Qualifications to Run and Hold Office Form
This form is required to be filed. A copy of this form will be included in the final draft of the 2022 School and Special Districts Candidate Filing Guide and provided to prospective candidates at the time they are issued their candidate filing packet. Questions regarding additional qualifications to run and hold office that may apply to board members should be directed to the district’s legal counsel.

Request for District Election Services
Prior to or at the same time as submitting your resolution for ballot measure consolidation to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, please provide our office a copy of the resolution and a completed District Request for Election Services form. Please note: If the District Request for Elections Services form is filed with our office prior to the filing of the District Election Packet, it does not need to be filed again.
